Alaska Airlines announced yesterday that they will begin non-stop service to Seattle, beginning on November 16, 2015. This represents the first commerical, non-stop flight service to the west coast from Charleston.

A big reason for this being the first transcontinental service offered from Charleston is due to the ever-growing presence of Boeing in the Charleston Lowcountry. Boeing, headquartered in Seattle (Everett, WA), opened up the company's only other final assembly plant for wide-body jets in Charleston. Boeing South Carolina broke ground on the 1.2 million square-foot facility in November 2009 and began production of the 787 Dreamliner in July 2011. As a result of Boeing South Carolina, the aviation scene has drastically changed over the past 5 years in Charleston.

Alaska Airlines is the third airline to introduce service to Charleston in 2015.
